Understanding Plan C

Plan C is an informal term used to describe a medication abortion, also known as the abortion pill. It’s called "Plan C" in reference to other common reproductive plans: Plan A (parenting), Plan B (emergency contraception), and Plan C (abortion pills). Many people use the term when considering ordering abortion pills online, through telehealth, or receiving them by mail.

Texas Abortion Laws on Telehealth

Some telehealth providers offer medication abortion (commonly called the abortion pill) through online consultations. However, there’s important information to understand before choosing this option—including that buying abortion pills online is currently banned in Texas. You cannot legally obtain abortion pills via telemedicine or mail in Texas.

What is the abortion pill?

The abortion pill is actually a series of two medications taken to end an early pregnancy (FDA-approved up to 10 weeks). The first pill, mifepristone, blocks the hormone progesterone, which is essential for pregnancy to progress. Without it, the lining of the uterus breaks down. The second pill, misoprostol, is taken 24-48 hours later and causes the uterus to contract and expel the pregnancy.

Though often described as simple, a medication abortion is a significant medical decision. It’s important to be fully informed about the process, possible side effects, risks, and what to expect afterward.

Why a pre-abortion ultrasound matters

Before taking abortion pills, especially through a telehealth provider, it’s often recommended (and sometimes required) to get an ultrasound.

This step confirms several critical factors:

  • That you are actually pregnant and how far along you are (to determine if you're eligible for the abortion pill)
  • Whether the pregnancy is viable (ruling out miscarriage by confirming a heartbeat)
  • Confirming the pregnancy is in the uterus (ruling out an ectopic pregnancy which is a medical emergency)

Our clinics in Texas offer free ultrasound services so that you don’t have to make this decision in the dark. Same-day appointments may be available, and all our services are confidential and at no cost to you.
